We were delighted to walk along the stone-paved streets and watch the residents and tourists enjoying a coffee at one of the best Luxembourg cafe or a good meal at a restaurant. Things to do

Vianden Castle

Vianden Castle is a medieval fortification in the canton of Vianden in Luxembourg. It is one of the largest preserved castles west of the Rhine.10 euros you will have to pay to go inside the castle. The castle was shown and presented with so much creativity and love. There is also a café and animals are allowed too. You can spend a whole afternoon reading or watching a film there.

Mudam-Musée d'Art Moderne

The Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, or Mudam for short, is Luxembourg’s museum of modern art. It is located on the site of Fort Thüngen on the Kirchberg Plateau in Luxembourg City. The museum bears the name of Grand Duke Jeans, father of the current Grand Duke Henri.

Grand Ducal Palace

The Grand Ducal Palace in Luxembourg’s old town at 17 Rue Marché aux Herbes / at the Krautmarkt is the city residence of the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg. You have also the opportunity to watch the marching guard outside. Every half an hour to so they change the guard in a simple ceremony which is nice to watch. The palace is in the center of town so definitely worth a stop by when exploring Luxembourg.

The Casemates of Luxembourg City are caves and passageways carved into the rock, built for defensive purposes from the 17th century and originally forming part of the Luxembourg Fortress.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Luxembourg City and the cathedral church of the Archdiocese. The Luxembourgers also refer to the church as Mariendom.

National Museum of History and Art

Exquisite museum of Luxembourg historical artifacts dating from the Stone Age to early Middle Ages. The people can visit it free of charge. We would recommend going there once. Do not miss out the lower two floors as it has some beautiful elements of pre-historic times.

Bourscheid Castle

The castle is located in north west of Luxembourg and most of it is the remains due to various invasions. The castle itself has 11 watch towers and we can enjoy the scenic beauty since the tower is at a height of 370m above sea level. Though most of the castle is destroyed it still holds the old world charm and carries history dating back to the year 1000. Dogs with leash are allowed. With the entry tickets you get a brochure and an optional audio tour or guided tour. You exit through a small souvenir shop. A small cafeteria is also present inside. Worth visiting this one of a kind and one of the oldest castles in Luxembourg!

Adolphe Bridge

The Adolphe Bridge, also known as the “New Bridge”, crosses the Petruss Valley in Luxembourg and connects the Boulevard Royal in the old town with the Avenue de la Liberté in the station district. It is named after Grand Duke Adolph and is one of the largest stone arch bridges in the world.

Beaufort Castle

The ruins of Beaufort Castle are located in the commune of Beaufort in Luxembourg. It is about 5 km west of the town center and about 35 meters lower in a valley. The castle originally stood about 23 m above the valley floor on a rocky cone, but over time it has been expanded extensively down the valley.

The Monument of Remembrance, usually known by the nickname of the Gëlle Fra (Luxembourgish for ‘Golden Lady’), is a war memorial dedicated to the thousands of Luxembourgers who volunteered for service in the armed forces of the Allied Powers during World War

Clervaux Castle

Castle Clerf, also called Schloss Clervaux, is a castle in the Luxembourgish municipality of Clerf. It stands on a promontory in the middle of the village and was founded as a high castle in the 12th century at the latest. The first known lords of the castle were the Sponheimers.

Neumunster Abbey

Documents prove that textile craftsmen such as weavers, dyers or fullers worked here by the water in the 14th century. The wooden huts from the second half of the 14th or early 15th century were then replaced by stone workshops. In the 17th century there was a community of tanners on the left bank of the Alzette, opposite the church.

Place Guillaume II is a central square in the city of Luxembourg. It is named after Wilhelm II., King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. After the knot of the monk’s belt, in Luxembourgish “de Knued”, the square is also popularly called “Knuedler”.

The Parc Merveilleux, often also called Märchenpark Bettemburg, is an animal and leisure park in the municipality of Bettemburg in the canton of Esch an der Alzette and the only zoo in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Constitution Square

Constitution square is more than just a square with flags. It sits on the edge of a valley, seconds away from the city center. The area consists of the square filled with memorials and sculptures, with a flight of steps leading down into a valley that is essentially a park with a river running through it. There is also a giant observation bridge that you can walk through below road level.

Fort Thüngen

Fort Thüngen, called Dräi Eechelen in Luxembourgish, is part of the historical fortifications of the city of Luxembourg. The fort is named after the Austrian fortress commander Freiherr Adam Sigmund von Thüngen and was built in 1732 around the defense work “Redoute du Parc” built by Vauban about 50 years earlier. It was surrounded by a deep moat and could be reached from Fort Obergrünewald through a 169 m long underground rock moat.

Chemin de la Corniche

Luxembourg is full of beautiful architecture and landscape. This wall is a division between the old and new Luxembourg. This is also called “the most beautiful balcony of Europe.” The Chemin de la Corniche is the best path to admire the lower city of Luxembourg. It runs along the Alzette valley on the ramparts. The view is truly amazing!

Where to eat

Traditional food to try in Luxembourg

Bouneschlupp and Gromperenzopp (Green Bean and Potato Soup)- green beans, potatoes, vegetable stock, onions, and smoked bacon or Metworst, and other spiced sausages.

Kuddelfleck is an old traditional Luxembourgish dish made with tripe coated in breadcrumbs, fried, then served with one of two sauces: white wine sauce or spicy tomato sauce. It is often served with boiled potatoes on the side.

Riesling Pork Pies and Riesling Pâté

Huesenziwwi is a dish consisting of marinated rabbit or hare cooked with wine and onions in a thickened sauce made from hare or calf’s blood, red wine, and cognac.

The wäinzoossiss (sausages) are made from grilled veal or pork cooked with wine and then served pan fried with moschterzoos (a creamy Luxembourg mustard sauce with Riesling) and mashed potatoes or kniddlelen and green vegetables or a salad.

Flammkuchen is a Luxembourg classic based on the Alsatian tarte flambée with crème fraîche (sour cream), onions, and bacon. It is very popular in restaurants.

Judd mat Gaardebounen is a national dish made of Judd (smoked pork collar) and broad beans (special Luxembourg beans) in a creamy sauce.

The traditional Letzeburger Kniddlelen, a dumpling, is very popular. They are boiled with a creamy white sauce and smoked bacon (lardon).

Bouchée à la Reine is a buttery vol-au-vent puff pastry filled with chicken and mushrooms mixed together in a creamy or béchamel sauce.

Gromperekichelcher is a version of potato pancake that is one of Luxembourg’s most beloved dishes.

Salaisons Fumées – Marque Nationale Grand-Duché de Luxembourg are hams made with legs of pork which must carry the national protected Luxembourg brand name for pork or the equivalent foreign designation.
