Maiden Tower

The Maiden’s Tower is located in the southeast of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, in the still partially walled medieval town of İçəri Şəhęr. Presumably, it was a component of the former city defenses, of which the 29.5-meter-tall tower was a part and which no longer exists in the eastern half. The tower, together with the entire old city center and the Shirvanshahs’ palace, has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2000.

İçəri Şəhər

The old, partially walled area of Baku, Azerbaijan’s city center is known as İçəri Şəhęr. In 2000, İçęri Şęhęr was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city was rocked by an earthquake in November 2000. In the years that followed, many of the old town’s historic structures were destroyed, especially to create space for the relocation of representatives of multinational corporations. The population dropped from 5,000 to 3,200. For this reason, in 2003, the World Heritage Committee listed İçəri Şəhər as a piece of world heritage in danger.
