Things to do

Masaya

The Masaya volcano is situated close to the same-named city in Nicaragua, in the center of the 6 by 11 km Masaya Caldera. It’s situated in the National Park of the Masaya Volcano. The Nahuatl term for “burning mountain,” Popogatepe, is what the locals called the volcano. They revered him in pre-Columbian times, and his eruptions were interpreted as the expression of vengeful gods. As a result, the natives offered him human sacrifices, frequently in the form of infants or virgins.

Mombacho

In Nicaragua, there is a volcano called Mombacho that is close to Granada. One of the most striking sections of Nicaragua’s remaining tropical rainforest, with its own flora and wildlife, is located there in a natural reserve. There are about 700 types of plants that may be found in the area surrounding the volcano, many of which are orchids. There’s a great view of the nearby Lake Nicaragua and its islands from the volcano.Although still active, the Mombacho stratovolcano has not erupted since 1570. Previous eruptions are not documented.

Cerro

The 728-meter-tall Cerro  volcano in Nicaragua is situated close to León. It is situated in the mountain range known as the Cordillera de los Maribios, which is home to numerous active volcanoes. Although this volcano is highly active, it is climbable because of its unique characteristics, which allow for very accurate prediction of the eruption times. Every volcanic explosion causes the cone to expand.

Maderas

In Nicaragua, there is a stratovolcano called Maderas. After the Concepción, it is the second highest point on Ometepe Island. He was inactive during the historical period. Within the crater is a crater lake. High humidity levels and a wide variety of plants and animals define this cloud forest. On the Maderas, petroglyphs have been discovered. Scaling the Madera is a popular tourist destination.

Cañón de Somoto

A tributary of the Rio Coco, the Cañón de Somoto is located in northern Nicaragua, close to the city of Somoto. Only in 2004 did a team of scientists from the Czech Republic and Nicaragua make the discovery.

Big Corn Island

As its name implies, the Big Corn Island is the bigger brother of the Little Corn Island. The two Corn Islands travel to the Big Corn Island from Managua. Though, in my opinion, Little Corn Island outshines its bigger brother, Big Corn Island still boasts unique and very Caribbean places that nicely round off a visit in Nicaragua.

Santiago de Managua Old Cathedral

Consecrated in 1946, the historic Santiago de Managua cathedral in Managua, Nicaragua, dates back to its construction in 1925. The structure is in ruins after suffering significant damage in an earthquake in 1972. It is situated in what was once known as Plaza de la República, or Plaza de la Revolution. The Catedral Metropolitana de la Inmaculada Concepción de María de Managua, its successor, was completed in 1993.

Vulkan Masaya National Park

Since the two volcanoes’ most recent eruptions, the environment of the park has experienced several changes. The park is ablaze with fragrant blooms throughout the dry season, featuring numerous orchid species and the national flower, the sacuanjoche. The nocturnal group of wildlife found in the national park consists of coyotes, skunks, raccoons, and possums. You can encounter deer, parrots, iguanas, monkeys, and bunnies during the day. Petrified lava and the lush foliage of a tropical dry forest are two other highlights within the national park.

Playa Gigante

A little fishing village called Playa Gigante is situated in Nicaragua’s Southern Pacific Coast, to the north of San Juan del Sur.There are roughly 500 residents in the town, along with an increasing number of foreigners, two surf camps, and a range of eateries and cafes along the shore. There is a wide selection of regional and global food. It is situated on a lovely harbor that is perfect for swimming in and is reachable on foot just south of some top-notch surfing beaches. There are several possibilities for lodging, ranging in price from backpacker-friendly to somewhat opulent.

  1. I loved my trip to Nicaragua. Volcan Masaya, Grenada, and the beaches of San Juan del Sur were incredible. I highly recommend anyone considering making the trip do so.
