Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks were split up in May 1949 for administrative purposes. Prior to the establishment of the national parks, the Orma, Watta, Maasai, and Kamba ethnic groups—all of whom were had to abandon their settlements—owned the land in question.

Hell’s Gate National Park

Located northwest of Nairobi, south of Lake Naivasha, lies Hell’s Gate National Park in Kenya. Situated at an elevation of around 1500 meters above sea level, the expansive 68 km² park is part of the Great Rift Valley. The park’s breathtaking scenery is its main draw. Notable sights include the Njorowa Gorge, also known as Hell’s Gate, two dormant volcanoes, and two volcanic columns known as Central Tower and Fischer’s Tower.
