Things to do

Veste Oberhaus

Veste Oberhaus is a castle on the left bank of the Danube, opposite the old town of Passau on the right. Founded in 1219, it was for most of that time the castle and residence of the princely bishop of the Bishopric of Passau. The inscription 1499 on the facade, which can be seen from afar, shows only one of the years of construction of the castle, which was repeatedly expanded until 1800. The complex is listed as an archaeological monument under the file number D-2-7446-0052 in the Bavarian Atlas as “underground medieval and early modern findings and discoveries in the area of the Oberhaus fortress”. It is also listed as an architectural monument of Passau under file number D-2-62-000-438.

St. Stephan Cathedral

The St. Stephan Cathedral in Passau is a baroque episcopal church that was rebuilt from 1668 onwards. It is the episcopal see and main church of the diocese of Passau. The cathedral was built on the highest elevation in the old town between the rivers Inn and Danube, 13 m above the Danube and 303 m above sea level. Passau Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals with the largest baroque church interior north of the Alps.

Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art Wörlen is an art museum in the old town of Passau that was founded in 1990 by the architect and art patron Hanns Egon Wörlen. Schaiblingsturm

The Schaiblingsturm is one of Passau’s landmarks. It stands on the south side of Passau’s old town near the top of the town on a rock rising out of the Inn on the Innkai. Its name can probably be derived from the conical shape of the tower walls: Scheibe – Schaibling. The round tower with the high pointed helmet is a witness to the medieval city fortifications of Passau.

Marienbrücke

The Marienbrücke is a two-lane road bridge in Passau. It spans the Inn at the level of the cathedral and city theater and connects the old town with the Innstadt, the only district of Passau to the right of the Inn.

Wittelsbacherbrunnen

The Wittelsbacherbrunnen is located on Residenzplatz in Passau. It was built from 1904 to 1906 by the Prince Regent Luitpold by the sculptor Jakob Bradl in the neo-baroque style, and dedicated in 1903 to commemorate the city of Passau’s 100-year affiliation with the Kingdom of Bavaria. The fountain consists of three parts: the basin with the inscription, the coat of arms of Passau and the coat of arms of Bavaria; the column with dolphins, shells and angel figures, which symbolize the Danube, Ilz and Inn rivers that flow together in Passau, and the crowning figure of the Virgin Mary.

Vornbach Castle

Vornbach Castle is located on the Inn in the district of the same name in the municipality of Neuhaus am Inn in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau. It is located in the former convent buildings of the Vornbach Benedictine monastery.

The Roman Museum

The Roman Museum Kastell Boiotro is a museum located in the Innstadt district of Passau. It was opened in 1982. The museum stands on the foundations of the late Roman fort Boiotro; remains of the military fortification can be viewed in the museum’s open-air area. Saint Severin, missionary of Noricum, probably had a monastery built in the ruins of the Roman fort at the end of the 5th century, and through his records the name Boiotro (corrupted late Latin for the name of the previous fort, Boiodurum) has been preserved to the present day.

  • CHOOSE YOUR AIRPORT WISELY: If you’re flying from North America, you’re likely to find the best flight deals into Frankfurt, home to Germany’s largest international airport. However, Frankfurt is five hours away from Berlin and almost four hours away from Munich. Since train tickets can be pricey and gas is expensive, it may be worth paying a little extra to fly closer to your destination.

  • Get city tourism cards – Most of the major cities in Germany offer city tourism cards. These include free admission to major museums and attractions, discounts on restaurants, and usually unlimited public transportation. If you plan on seeing a lot, these cards can save you money.
  •  Get transportation day passes – If you’re going to be using public transportation a lot in a city, get a day pass. Paying for single rides adds up quickly.
  • SEASON” SAVINGS: If you can, try to visit Germany in June or September. You’ll find better deals during these months and the weather is still usually very pleasant.
  • Book your train early – Trains in Germany are expensive but you can get a saver ticket that is around 40-50% off the standard fare if you book at least a week in advance.
  • You can get online for free and make use of the free Wi-fi. Many cafes and renowned chains like McDonald’s and Starbucks offer free Wi-Fi in Germany, as do the various municipal buildings, libraries, parks, and some museums.
  •  Look out for free museum days – Most museums in Germany offer free admission on certain days or evenings.
  • KEEP AN EYE ON SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: Public school in Germany has five main school holidays: winter holidays, spring break, summer holidays, autumn holidays and Christmas holidays.
  •  Hop-On Hop-Off bus tours or Big Bus tours

Shopping

Anyone who arrives at Passau train station can already see it from the train: the city gallery. What initially sounds like an art exhibition is actually a large, light-flooded shopping center with more than 90 shops, cafés and restaurants – right in the heart of the City of Three Rivers and in the immediate vicinity of the old town, pedestrian zone and university. In addition to national and international brands, there are also many local shops there. This mix makes the city gallery something special. In addition to C&A, Deichmann and Hans im Glück, there are, for example, Gepp’s Feinkost, the jewelry store LUISA LUISA and the Galerie Café Simon.

Getting Around

There are a wealth of options when it comes to avoiding driving in Germany. With an effectively nationalized railway network, crossing the country by train means buying a ticket from Deutsche Bahn. At the local level, Germany’s states manage buses, trams, metro networks, suburban trains, and ferries. Public transportation systems in Germany are safe, efficient, and fairly easy to use. As a result, some German cities are starting to shake off the stereotype of being a car-loving nation. Across the country, 30 million passengers use public transportation in Germany on an average day.

Modes of public transport in Germany:

S-bahn (city rapid rail), and, as the name suggests, is the fastest form of public transportation.

U-Bahn is the German version of the metro.

Tram – They travel on rails alongside regular roads and have multiple stops within city center areas.

Buses are the mainstay of many German towns and cities, linking further-afield places and operating into the night when the other forms of transport stop running (although S-Bahn and U-bahn trains typically run all night over the weekend in larger cities).

Regional trains are either RB (Regionalbahn), with multiple stops, or RE (Regionalexpress), which are faster and have fewer stops.

Usually valid for groups of up to five people, they give unlimited travel for a day or 24 hours within specified zones.

If you are required to validate your ticket it will be printed with something along the lines of “Bitte entwerten” (please validate).
