The Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome was originally built as a mausoleum for the Roman emperor Hadrian and his successors and was later converted into a castle by various popes. From 1901 the building was no longer used as a castle. Castel Sant’Angelo has been a museum since February 13, 1906.

The Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican in Rome is the memorial church of the Apostle Simon Peter. It is located on the territory of the independent state of the Vatican City and is one of the seven pilgrimage churches of Rome. With a built-up area of 20,139 m² and a capacity of 20,000 people, St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest of the papal basilicas and one of the largest and most important churches in the world.
St. Peter's Square
St. Peter’s Square was laid out in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667 under Pope Alexander VII. St. Peter’s Square is part of the territory of the Vatican City. The colonnades form the state border between Vatican City and Italy.
Sistine Chapel
The Sistine Chapel is one of the chapels of the Apostolic Palace. It is the place where the conclave is held and houses some of the most famous paintings in the world. Its name refers to Pope Sixtus IV, under whom it was built between 1475 and 1483. The chapel was consecrated on August 15, 1483. It is under the patronage of the Assumption of Mary into heaven. It is located immediately north of St. Peter’s Basilica and is connected to it via the Scala Regia and Sala Regia. For tourists, however, entry is only possible via the Vatican Museums.

Vatican necropolis
The Vatican Necropolis is a necropolis in the Vatican City just below the Vatican Grottoes of St. Peter’s Basilica. It was a Roman burial site and has only been accessible again since the excavations in the 1950s. In it is the presumed tomb of the apostle Peter.
Mater Ecclesiae
Mater Ecclesiae is a monastery in the Vatican City and is located in the Vatican Gardens. It was inaugurated by Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1994 and bears the patronage of the title of Mary Mother of the Church. The nuns living there should dedicate themselves in a special way to intercession and prayer for the Pope and the Roman Curia. Every five years it is inhabited by various women’s orders, since 2009 by a convent of Salesian women. Pope emeritus Benedict XVI has also lived since 2013. in part of the building.

Around the Vatican City, more or less all of the stores sell the same things.
As soon as you come out of St. Peter’s Basilica you’ll find a souvenir shop on your left. It doesn’t have a name but there is the writing souvenir next to the door! They sell many articles like postcards, calendars, statues, paintings and books about the Popes and the Vatican history.
Near to St. Peter’s Square you’ll also find the Galleria S. Pietro shop – Via dei Corridori, 6 – Largo del Colonnato, 5 – Rome.
Walking from St. Peter’s Square to the Vatican Museums you’ll pass by Via di Porta Angelica. This street has the most Vatican souvenir shops of them all!
Via della Conciliazione is the Street that takes you from Saint Peter’s Square to Castel Sant’Angelo. It has the most book shops and some of the best souvenir shops for religious articles in that area.
Transport
There is no public transport in the country. A heliport and a short railway are used for special occasions only. Most visitors will walk from a nearby Italian bus or train stop, or car parking. Given an average walking speed of 3.6 km/h (2.2 mph), Vatican City can be crossed in 20 minutes or less.
To get to the Vatican the nearest metro stop is Ottaviano on line A. This is the orange line that runs through the Flaminio (Piazza del Popolo), Barberini (Trevi Fountain), and Termini stations. Exiting onto Via Ottaviano, the entrance to the Vatican is just around the corner, less than a 10 minute walk.
