Plaza Independencia

Plaza Independencia is a square in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo. The Plaza Independencia forms the central and largest square in Montevideo. It is located at the eastern end of Ciudad Vieja and is on the border with Barrio Centro. One of the capital’s most important streets, Avenida 18 de Julio, leads from the plaza towards the east and thus into the Centro district.

With a height of 105 m, the striking building in the Art Deco style was the tallest structure in South America until 1935. Salto del Penitente

The Salto del Penitente is a waterfall in Uruguay. This tourist attraction is located in the Lavalleja department near the city of Minas in the middle of the Parque Salto del Penitente. The access to this area is at kilometer point 125 of Ruta 8. From there, a path about 18 kilometers long leads to the 60 meter high waterfall. In 2004 a building was built into the rock near the waterfall, which serves as a rest house and lookout point.

National Museum of Visual Arts (Uruguay) (Spanish: Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales) a museum in Parque Rodó, Montevideo, Uruguay. It was inaugurated on December 10, 1911.This museum has the largest collection of Uruguayan artworks. Among them are works by Olga Piria, Rafael Barradas, Joaquín Torres García, José Cúneo, Carlos Federico Sáez, Pedro Figari, Juan Manuel Blanes and artist Pablo Serrano who lived in Montevideo for twenty years.The museum also hosts temporary shows, in many cases foreign artists’ itinerant exhibitions.

The Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes “Juan Manuel Blanes” is a museum that opened in 1930 in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo. The museum, named after the famous Uruguayan painter Juan Manuel Blanes,whose style is reminiscent of the neo-classical Renaissance mansions in Italy.The building is surrounded by a large park, in which there is a Japanese garden, opened in 2001 to mark the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and Japan.

It has become a museum belonging to the municipal administration of Maldonado, under the name: Museo Parque Municipal Castillo Francisco Piria. The Cerro Pan de Azúcar Native Wildlife and Breeding Station is a nature park and zoo located close to the coastal city of Piriápolis in the Department of Maldonado, in southeastern Uruguay. The park belongs to the Municipal Administration Department of Maldonado. Some 250 examples of 53 species of Uruguayan animals[1] are housed within an area of 86 hectares, surrounded by native trees and bushes. 300,000 people visit the park annually, many of which are groups of students.

Plaza de Cagancha, or Plaza Cagancha, also known as Plaza Libertad, is a square of the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo. It is located on Montevideo’s main avenue, 18 de Julio Avenue, in the neighborhood of Centro.In 1829, four years after the declaration of Independence, it was decided to pull down the fortifications of the Ciudad Vieja and extend the city to form the “Ciudad Nueva”. 

 The plans for some additional 160 city blocks and included a new square, which in 1840 took on the name Plaza de Cagancha, after the homonymous battle of 1839, when General Rivera defeated the invading forces from Buenos Aires. In 1867 the Pillar of Peace (Columna de La Paz) was erected in its centre with a bronze statue on its top.At the beginning of the 20th century, the French landscape architect Charles Thays undertook the embellishment of this square.

THE FUENTE DE LOS CANDADOS (Fountain of Locks) is a stone fountain on a street corner in Montevideo. It would be a fairly forgettable fountain under normal circumstances, were it not for the hundreds of padlocks attached to its surrounding railing.

When the owners of Bar Facal, one of the most famous restaurants in the city, installed a stone fountain on their street corner, they had no idea it would become one of the city’s most enduring symbols of love.
