With a maximum depth of 125 meters and a diameter of about 300 meters, the Great Blue Hole is nearly round in shape. When it emerged from the limestone layers at the end of the last glacial epoch, it provided an entrance to an underground cave system that was submerged by the rising sea level. At around ninety meters below the surface, there is a thermocline that contains hydrogen sulfide. In June 2009, UNESCO included the Belize Barrier Reef to its list of globally endangered natural heritage.
