Greece has a large number of airports; during the summer months, charter flights operate from several international airports directly to the islands or a small number of airports on the mainland.

getting around Greece

The most convenient way to supplement buses with overland public transportation in Greece is to rent a scooter, motorbike, or car, especially on the islands where there will always be at least one rental outlet in any significant town or resort. Train networks are limited, and buses cover the majority of main routes on the mainland and provide basic connections on the islands.

Within the islands, internal flights can save days of travel; Athens-Rhodes is just two hours back, compared to 28 hours by boat. Inter-island travel involves taking ferries, catamarans, or hydrofoils, which will eventually transport you to any of the sixty-plus inhabited isles.
