Things to do

It was a warm Sunday in January when we first arrived in Landshut. We wanted to take advantage of the lovely January day that we were fortunate enough to experience, which was 13 degrees Celsius. Trausnitz Castle was our first destination. Sadly, there aren’t many parking spots, and there were a lot of guests. We looked about for a parking spot, but were unsuccessful. Fortunately, we discovered one in front of a house. These are our incredible recollections:

Trausnitz Castle

Located in Landshut, Bavaria, Germany, is the medieval castle known as Castelul Trausnitz. Originally the home of the Wittelsbach dynasty, it served as the educational headquarters for the Inferior Bavaria from 1255 until 1503, and later on it housed the ereditari leaders of the entire Bavaria. One of the principal structures of the 13th century, the Knights’ Hall at Castle Trausnitz was constructed as early as 1260–1270. The 245 m2 space is divided into two naves, each of which has four “Jochen” spaces. The structures that were employed date from the era known as the “Zisterziensergotik”. The Knights’ Hall is now utilized for temporary exhibitions or festival feasts.

City center Landshut

A shopping center next to the Landshuter Oldstadt is called the City Center Landshut (CCL). It houses more than 40 businesses and a multiplex on eight floors with about 1,600 seats. The planning for the 70 million euro building started in 1998. It should develop into a center-near, environment-passing complex. The construction started in 2001 on a plot of land next to the Isar that had previously been used as a large park. After around two years of construction, the CCL opened on October 23, 2003, and the movie theater opened a month later.

St. Martin Church

Built as a hall church by master builder Hans Krumenauer about 1385, the Landshut parish and college church of St. Martin, or Martinskirche for short, was completed circa 1500 with the important contribution of Hans von Burghausen. Its remarkable architecture, which combines aspects of late and high Gothic, is verticalized across its dimensions, making the church one of the most significant Gothic monumental structures in southern Germany. With a height of 130.1 meters, the Landshut Martinskirche tower is both the highest church tower in Bavaria and the world’s tallest brick tower.

One of the landmarks of the Landshut is the Middle Ages Land Tor, which is located on the right Isarufer. In the historic city center of Landshut, a bridge connects two granite pillars. Where residents and tourists now congregate to enjoy the Flanieren, the Landtag formerly served as a part of the city wall to protect the city from invaders. Das Landshuter Stadtwappen der Drei Helme, das ebenfalls Schutz und Hut symbolisiert, sprang aus dem Torbogen.

Ländtor Landshut

The raftsmen’s landing spot on the Isar is where the medieval Ländtor acquired its name. Only the Zwinger’s (huge courtyard) outer gate is still standing today. In the 19th century, Theaterstrasse became too narrow, so an even taller gate a few meters into the city had to be dismantled. The only gate structures left standing from the original eight city gates are the Burghauser Tor and the Ländtor on Alte Bergstrasse.

Church of St. Jodok

After continuing to the river, we stopped and relaxed on a bench to observe the river and take in the breathtaking view of the bridge, the river, and the church of St. Jodok. After St. Martin’s parish church, St. Jodok, commonly known as Jodokskirche, is Landshut’s second-oldest parish church. It is one of the three big Gothic brick churches in Landshut’s old town, the other two being the Martinskirche and Heilig-Geist-Kirche. Similar to many other Landshut churches, the construction of this one started in the late Gothic period, or the second part of the 15th century, during the High Gothic period. The majority of the furniture in use today dates back to the 19th-century Neo-Gothic style.

Landshut city residence

Constructed between 1536 and 1543 by Duke Ludwig X, the Landshut city residence is a palace situated in the center of Landshut’s old town. It was subsequently occupied by a number of nobles as their primary place of living. In the eighteenth century, the façade that faces the old town underwent a classical renovation.

Our final destination in Landshut was the Heilig-Geist-Kirche, which we visited after admiring the city’s stunning sights:

Heilig-Geist-Kirche

The Heilig-Geist-Kirche, located in Landshut’s old town, is a branch church of the city-owned St. Martin Roman Catholic parish. It was constructed between 1407 and 1461 in accordance with Hans von Burghausen’s designs. It has not been profaned; instead, it serves as a venue for exhibitions in the Landshut museums nowadays. Holy Spirit Church does not hold services other than the yearly mass on Whit Monday in observance of the patronage.
