Diversity of Tortoises in the Galapagos 2023 Best Guide

An archipelago in the eastern Pacific Ocean is called the Galapagos Islands. They are part of Ecuador and form the Galápagos province, which has Puerto Baquerizo Moreno as its city. They are situated on the equator, around 1000 km west of the Ecuadorian coast in South America. The term “Galápago” describes the turtle shell, which is arched in the neck region of certain species of giant tortoises found in the Galapagos, resembling a saddle.

Flora and Fauna

The islands’ remarkable and unusual flora and fauna are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Galapagos Islands National Park provides protection for them. As a result, rigorous nature protection is in place across 99 percent of the Exclusive Economic Zone and over 97% of the Galapagos Islands’ land area. The national park administration, which is situated in Puerto Ayora, closely regulates and controls the usage of the islands for agriculture and fishing, as well as the passage across the waterways.

Vegetation

Currently, 697 plant species have been identified on the Galapagos Islands. 167 of the 439 natural species that were present on the Galapagos before they were discovered are endemic, meaning they are unique to the island. Humans have brought in 258 non-native species, some of which are rather problematic. Over time, non-native plant species have multiplied dramatically and are now thought to number in the thousands.

On the wet windward coasts of Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Santiago, and Floreana islands in the Galapagos, extensive clumps of Scalesia pedunculata, a flowering plant species in the Asteraceae family, can be found. The morphology of the islands and the moisture-carrying trade winds influence the climate and weather of the Galapagos archipelago, which is located in the southeast trade wind zone. The precipitation on the windward side of the islands is generally significantly higher than on the leeward side.Because to human encroachment, invasive introduced plant species as Psidium guajava and Cedrela odorata, and goat grazing, Scalesia pedunculata is considered vulnerable. While the wood of the tree is soft, other contributing issues include fires and fuel-related chopping.

Fauna

There are many different species in the Galapagos Islands and their surroundings. About forty percent of the native species have names derived from the islands. There, and nowhere else on the planet, are the majority of them endemic. Among the creatures that call the Galapagos Islands home are the maned seal, two species of hair-tailed bats, 149 bird species, reptiles, and invertebrates, as well as the Galapagos sea lion, fur seal, rice rats, and tortoiseshell rat.

The majority of the natural non-endemic plant species of the Galapagos are also present in South America, which is nearby. The species composition of the Galapagos Islands is “disharmonious” in contrast to the “harmonious” flora of the mainland because only a small number of species were able to establish a founding population on the islands. Bartolomé

Among the Galápagos Islands, Bartolomé Island is one of the smaller and younger ones geologically. It is 1.2 kilometers in size and situated slightly to the east of San Salvador. It bears the name of Royal Navy Captain Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan. At 114 meters, the island’s highest point is located. The beaches, Pinnacle Rock—which is frequently featured in photos of the archipelago—as well as the fish stocks and penguins are special attractions.
