France is a nation mostly found in Western Europe. It also includes American territory and areas abroad as well as those in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The French West Indies, South American French Guiana, North Atlantic Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and numerous islands in Oceania and the Indian Ocean make up its overseas territories. The metropolitan area spans the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel, and the North Sea.

France possesses the world’s largest exclusive economic zone because of its numerous coastal areas. France shares boundaries in continental Europe with Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, Andorra, and Spain. With a total area of 643,801 km2 (248,573 sq mi), its eighteen integral regions—five of which are overseas—are home to almost 68 million people (as of July 2022).

The largest city and the hub of the nation’s commerce and culture, Paris serves as the capital of France, a unitary semi-presidential republic. Other significant cities in the country include Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille, Bordeaux, and Nice. The region that is now Metropolitan France has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period, when Celtic tribes known as Gauls arrived during the Iron Age. After Rome conquered the region in 51 BC, a unique Gallo-Roman culture emerged, which served as the linguistic basis for French. The Carolingian Empire’s core was the Kingdom of Francia, founded by the Germanic Franks.

Under Napoleon Bonaparte, France achieved its political and military apex in the early 19th century, conquering most of continental Europe and founding the First French Empire. The history of Europe and the world was influenced by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Following the fall of the empire, France had a turbulent period of decline marked by a string of unstable governments until the French Third Republic was established in 1870 amidst the Franco-Prussian War. The Belle Époque, a time of optimism, scientific and artistic blossoming, and economic prosperity, was followed by decades of hardship.

Among the main combatants in World War I, France won the conflict at a heavy financial and human cost. Although it was one of the Allies in World War II, the Axis quickly took control of it in 1940. The short-lived Fourth Republic was founded after liberation in 1944 and eventually disbanded during the Algerian War. Charles de Gaulle founded the Fifth Republic as it exists now in 1958. In the 1960s, Algeria and the majority of other French colonies gained independence, albeit most of them maintained strong military and economic connections to France.
