There are many reasons to visit this island, including its stunning water parks, Mount Teide, and the last remaining natural jungle in Europe. To learn the mysteries of this stunning island, read our article.

Of the Canary Islands, Tenerife is the biggest and most populated island. Forty-three percent of the archipelago’s entire population resides there. As of January 2022, it had a population of 978,100 and a land area of 2,034 square kilometers (785 sq mi). It is also the most populated island in Macaronesia and Spain. Tenerife is the most frequented island in the archipelago, with an estimated five million people visiting each year. Being home to the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the biggest carnivals in the world, it is one of the most popular tourist sites in both Spain and the entire globe [8–9].

Tenerife La Laguna

The island council’s (cabildo insular) headquarters is in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the island. The autonomous community of the Canary Islands has that city and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as its joint capitals. Governmental organizations including the ministries and the president’s office are located in each of the two cities. Since the Crown’s edict in 1927, this has been the current arrangement. (The Canary Islands had only one capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, from 1833 to 1927, when Spain’s territories were divided). The contemporary Auditorio de Tenerife, the Canary Islands’ architectural emblem, is located in Santa Cruz.

The University of La Laguna is located on the island. Being the oldest university in the Canaries, it was established at San Cristóbal de La Laguna in 1792. La Laguna is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is the third most populated city in the archipelago and the second most populated city on the island.

Until Santa Cruz took over as the capital in 1833, it served as the capital of the Canary Islands. Tenerife South Airport and Tenerife North Airport are the two airports that service Tenerife. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Teide National Park lies in the heart of the island. Included in it is Mount Teide, the highest point in both Spain and the Atlantic Ocean among all the islands. When viewed from the base, it is also the third-largest volcano in the world. Since 2015, the Macizo de Anaga (massif), another natural feature of the island, has been recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Additionally, Tenerife has more indigenous species than any other European island.

As one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, the Canaries’ primary industry is tourism. The most popular island in the archipelago and a major travel destination in Spain is Tenerife la Laguna. 11,473,600 foreign visitors visited the Canary Islands in 2014. Without include the numbers of Spanish visitors, who account for an additional thirty percent of overall arrivals, Tenerife had 4,171,384 arrivals that year. The Canarian Statistics Centre (ISTAC) Report on Tourism from last year states that with over 3,980,000 visitors in 2014, the United Kingdom is the country with the most tourists.

The south of the island, which is hotter and drier and is home to numerous well-developed resorts like Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, is where tourism is more common. In more recent times, coastal development has extended from Playa de las Americas northward, engulfing the once-small hamlet of La Caleta (a popular destination for nudist vacationers). Following the Canarian Parliament’s adoption of the Moratoria act in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, new hotels are not allowed to be constructed on the island unless they are five stars or higher and include amenities like golf courses or convention centers. The purpose of this act’s passage was to raise the bar for tourist services and encourage growth that is environmentally sensitive.nt.
