Salto Cristal

One of the stunning locations in Paraguay that is open to the public is the Salto Cristal. This location is more accessible to the capital and is easier to reach than many other similarly beautiful waterfalls. Since 2015, the complex housing the waterfall has undergone modifications. Previously, entry to the waterfall required a “fee of adventure” due to the challenging and precarious drop between stones. These days, it has a route marked with steps to appreciate the scenery. The closest city, La Colmena, is the route to reach the Salto Cristal, which is situated in the Ybycui region of the Isla Alta corporation. For this reason, many people believe that the leap is a feature of La Colmena.

But the Jesuits were expelled and the mission was abandoned not long after it was founded. Nonetheless, the nearby village is still inhabited today, with about 2500 people living there. UNESCO designated Jesús de Tavarangüe and the Jesuit retreat La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná as World Heritage Sites in 1993.

Castillo Carlota Palmerola

Designed by the unusual Palmerola Ayala family, Castillo Carlota Palmerola is situated in the village of Areguá in the lowlands of western Paraguay. Constructed in 1897, the home features a peculiar blend of medieval architectural elements and appears remarkably dislocated from its tropical surrounds. This was a deliberate oddity. The Palmerola Ayala family built their unique home and promptly invited the public to balls and festivities within, which enhanced their social standing and notoriety. The complex became a convent after the family gave the estate to the Catholic Church in 1956. A chapel was constructed to the gardens, and well-dressed revellers were replaced by nuns.
