Linz Castle

Heinrich von Virneburg, the archbishop of Cologne at the time, constructed the Castle of Linz (German: Burg Linz) at Linz am Rhein, Germany, between 1364 and 1368. The castle’s primary purpose was to collect river tolls. The fortress suffered severe damage and was under siege during the 1475 Neuss War. It was used as a prison between 1811 and 1851. When the town of Linz am Rhein was sold to Prussia in 1820, the castle’s significance diminished. The castle served as a jail once more during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. Today, the building is a public space that is privately owned.
