The top 20 most populous countries list in 2022 was largely unchanged from the 2021 edition, with the exception of minor shifts in rankings and statistics. With 37 million residents, Tokyo maintained its title as the world’s largest metropolis, with Delhi and Shanghai coming in second and third.
The two African cities with the highest rates of population growth in a single year were Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Lagos, in Nigeria. Their respective increases were 4.39% and 3.54%. Still the biggest city on the American continent is Sao Paulo, Brazil; farther down the table, Mexico City and Buenos Aires, Argentina, are very closely behind. Istanbul is the most populated city in Europe, home to about 14.5 million people. At 12,093 km^ (4,669 mi2), New York is the largest metropolis in the world by area. With an estimated population of 20,870,000, New York has the largest population in the country. Eight of the ten largest cities in the world by area are located in the US.
Based on the big cities we have visited so far, our favorites cities skylines are Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok and Frankfurt.

Naturally, we haven’t yet traveled to any of the major cities in the United States, China, Japan, or Brazil, but we plan to do so and our list of preferred cities will definitely change.
